Marketing in a Down Economy

During this down economy, it can be a challenge to think about spending extra money to "market" your business. The truth is that companies that act strategically and invest in their business now will have a better chance of weathering the stormy seas that we no doubt will be navigating for many months, if not years to come.
So, how do you do this? I have a couple of ideas for you:
  • Be sure to work with a marketing firm or consultant that is willing to create ROI models for your marketing strategy. You should be sure that your marketing strategies are going to support you in hitting your targets and aren't just distractions.
  • Resist the temptation to use the economy as an excuse. While it's true that we are all feeling the pinch, the truth is that there is still a lot of money out there being spent. It is HOW people are spending that has shifted.
  • Remember that marketing should not be viewed as a "cost" of doing business, rather it is an investment. Great marketing should provide you a return of at least 3 times your investment.
